Q&A with LaDanian Tomlinson

When I first met LaDanian Tomlinson, all I wanted to do was put my left hand behind my head, extend my right arm out (like above), and shake his hand. Die-heart New York Jets fan over here at Grungy Gentleman. So sitting down with LT to talk football, clothes, and New York City was amazing! Having my fantasy football teammate, Peter Davis by my side throughout the interview made it even more surreal.

Grungy Gentleman chats with New York Jets star running back, LaDanian Tomlinson below...

Grungy Gentleman: You spent a long time rocking the ‘powder blue’ out in San Diego. What drew you to the Big Apple?

LaDanian Tomlinson: The BIG lights (brief laugh). Ya know, Rex Ryan, great players like Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes. We got a lot of talent over here. That’s what ultimately drew me.

GG: Have you had fun since you’ve been here outside of the girdiron? What stands out to you?

LT: Yes! For sure. There’s so much happening in New York. The restaurants, Broadway plays, concerts…there’s just so much that’s going on here. The clubs too; everything is just so nice here.

GG: You hit up any of the stores yet?

LT: Of course. I like wearing Gucci. There’s one on 5^th Avenue.

GG: That there is sir, that there is. Where do you get your suiting from?

LT: Actually, I get my suits tailor-made.

GG: A made-to-measure guy. My man.

LT: For everyday stuff, I have a stylist get clothes for me. Gotta keep my focus.

GG: It is always important for anyone as successful as yourself to give back. Being a big Jets fan, I am aware that you have your own charity. What’s the cause for?

LT: Tomlinson’s Touching Lives is involved in helping families and communities through social awareness, cultural awareness, positive self-esteem, and education.

GG: What is one thing that you want to achieve with your foundation?

LT: Just raising awareness, ya know? Yeah absolutely. Just raising awareness. It’s important to do as much as you can. I am only one person. But if I help somebody and then that person helps somebody else because of it, that is what it is all about to me.

GG: Back to football. Man, since Rex has come over the franchise’s morale has changed so drastically. It seems as if the team rallies around your coach and embraces his bravado. How instrumental is that to the success of the New York Jets?

LT: It’s huge. You got to have each other’s back. We’re a close knit group. And obviously, you hear our coach talk a lot about certain things (smiling). And for us as players, we need to make him look good. And that’s what we do.

GG: Last Sunday, REVIS. Man, actually since Rex has taken the helm, that defense is on point.

LT: Six the other way. You already know.
