Grungy Gentleman 1 Year Anniversary

I am such a fan of menswear and my peers. So I went out and interviewed a ton of people that I look up to; to learn more about their interests and reflect on the year's past. There are a bunch of funny stories and memories. This piece is so rewarding because these people make my job so easy. They are the real influencers of the industry. Grungy Gentleman answers are at the end, along with a special 1 Year Anniversary Photo Shoot with Chiun-Kai Shih, shot in his exclusive "Chunky Lens" for Hipstamatic. Thanks for making year 1 SUPER-FUN y'all!!!

Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: John T. Edge - my good friend and executive director of the Southern Foodways Alliance. If it is to be eaten, John T. will know!
Favorite Athlete: Pistol Pete Maravich, Growing up an LSU fan, I even wore the floppy hunting socks on the basketball court against my coaches wishes.
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: Marc Jacobs going grunge, I forget the year, but the moment in time was memorable and set him apart. I always respected Marc for doing things his way.

A rainy evening with a small group of friends, turned into a late and eventful night. We always wanted our shop on Bond to feel like our home, and the only thing missing from it that night was a guest bedroom.

JEFF HALMOS and SAM SHIPLEY of SHIPLEY & HALMOS
Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: SS - The Onion. Never gets old, and the Onion Sports section has taken the publication to the next level.
Favorite Athlete: JH - Dwayne Wade
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: SS - That one Chanel show where they brought in an actual iceberg. Sorry, but that's just f-in stupid. Guess that means it was my least favorite?
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: JH - Has to be this picture! Boom goes the dynamite!

Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: I don't think I can answer objectively. There might be 289 upset people.
Favorite Athlete: Really? Have you met me? I guess I will have to go with David Beckham for obvious reasons.
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: There are too many to answer...John Bartlett's AFTER DARK collection. Thom Browne's Space Odyssey last summer.
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: MEETING YOU.

ERIC JENNINGS of SAKS FIFTH AVENUE

Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: The shower video for SCOOP!

Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: @askmrmickey @hanukhanuk for their smart comic relief. @detailsmatt for his industry 101, @detailseugene for sartorial realness and @mredelstein for everything else.
Favorite Athlete: The chick from Love & Basketball.
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: My first--and his last--John Galliano Show. If only because it was an experience I was able to check off the top of my bucket list and something I may never get to see again.
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: THE blue hat. That season (spring 2011), New York Fashion Week was all about your blue hat.

NIC SCREWS of ESQUIRE
Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: @TOMFORDISMYDAD or @carlscrush. I like my style with a sense of humor.
Favorite Athlete: Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. Had the luck of styling him for Esquire. Man loves dress up and looks good dressed up (see his recent Letterman appearance - the hotness.) Tied would be Tom Brady -- who was my first shoot at Esquire. Called me "babe" while I nervously put on his cufflinks & complimented my tangerine shoes. But he did show up to set with a metal wallet chain. So skip him, go back to Dwyane.
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: Always enjoy Burberry. Christopher Bailey always nails it (favorite in recent: fall 2010). But I have to say that I enjoy menswear best through presentations. I want to get up-close and feel the clothes in a setting directed by the designer. Band of Outsiders, Billy Reid, Bespoken, GANT by Michael Bastian have perfected the memorable presentation.
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: I will never forget how I met you -- literally hanging out of a taxi to offer Josh Peskowitz and I a ride to Gilded Age across town before even being properly introduced. That was your first show season and you killed the entrance. Plus I really loved all your backstage coverage that season. It showed in your photos & words how inspired you were by the designers you met & how happy you were to be a part of fashion’s inner circle.

Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: My dog @wafflesays - one of my Confederacy employee's Mike started a twitter page for him just to be weird/funny. It's the randomest Twitter feed ever. And of course @confederacybtq - it's how I spy on what my staff is up to haha.
Favorite Athlete: Oh you are so asking the wrong person. I can literally only think of Tom Brady and how Gisele won't let him cut his hair. My husband is going to disown me when he reads this.
Favorite Runway Show/Presentation Ever: My first Balenciaga show in Paris. It was fall 2001, I was so young sitting front row, and I was so excited. Nicolas Ghesquiere was being touted as like the next huge thing come to save fashion, the new Yves Saint Laurent, so everyone was buzzing about the show, and what he was going be sending down the runway. Every single look was epic. It felt like witnessing a really special moment in fashion. And it was! They were right; there hasnt really been any other designers quite like him.
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: When you featured Confederacy!! Am i allowed to say that? Haha.

Favorite Person to Follow on Twitter: I recently started following Alessandra Codinha (@ATCodinha), who writes for WWD. She's hilarious in person and somehow even funnier on Twitter. Also, Hanuk Hanuk, FentonFallon (Dana Lorenz), and Peter Davis (@PeterDavisNYC.)

The energy at that show, following those wins, really expressed the brand's forward momentum.
Favorite Grungy Gentleman Moment: There are so many Le Grungy moments to consider but if I had to choose one, I will concur with Billy Reid and name the following:

Billy and I had spent the day shooting clay pigeons for a video feature on Gilt MANual (Billy Reid: Locked and Loaded) and concluded with an evening celebration at the Billy Reid store, which always feel like home. A perfect day all in all.

I will also go one step further and predict the future by naming my favorite moment in the 2nd Year of the Grungy Gentleman. It will be the forthcoming launch of Le Grungy's style tome "Gettin' Grungy".  See you at the launch party, folks.
