Q&A with Designer Greg Armas of Assembly

Have you ever heard of the term “cutting edge?”

Designer Greg Armas of Assembly really does justice to that phrase, both literally and figuratively. The cuts on his vintage-inspired garments are very unique. He interprets classics by putting a subtle spin on them to create product that separates him from the rest of the pack. Recognizing that fashion is always changing and adding personality to his product have allowed Assembly to flourish.

Grungy Gentleman chats with “Mr. Cutting Edge” himself, Designer Greg Armas of Assembly below…

[Greg Armas]

Grungy Gentleman: What is one thing that everybody should know about Assembly?

Greg Armas: It is constantly changing, just like everything in fashion.
GG: Where did you get your inspiration from for your fall line?

GA: It is always vintage inspired. This year I put a little focus on the sun.
GG: Your product is very sleek and the colors are very basic. Yet you are able to create such an edgy look. How are you able to accomplish that?

GA: There is a lot of editing in the creative process. I would just assume to take something off, rather than add something else.

GG: A lot of your collection is comprised of classics and the quality is amazing! What elements go into making timeless pieces?

GA: Working with Italian and Japanese mills for fabrics and studying construction from vintage clothing.

GG: Do you have a favorite piece from your fall collection?

GA: The Baggy trench coat. It is massive!
GG: In your New York store, you carry your own line as well as others. Many of which are exclusive to the store. Can you discuss some of the collaborations you have done? Which stick out as favorites to you?

GA: Within the collection we have done horsehair necklaces with jeweler, Wendy Nichol. We have created leather bags with the brand Makr. This season I created a men’s clog boot with A'detacher.
GG: How do you choose which lines to carry outside of your own?

GA: I’m always looking for authenticity and personality in a garment.
GG: What is one piece every man should have in their wardrobe?

GA: Handsome shoes and good sunglasses. I guess that’s two!
GG: What can we expect next from Assembly?

GA: Destruction!
