How to Dress for a Weekend at Surf Lodge

[Loomstate x Surf Lodge]

Ever wish you could go to a hotspot but avoid dressing up to do so? Enter: Surf Lodge. The Surf Lodge is located in Montauk, NY and if you haven’t been there, it should be at the top of your list.

What is all the buzz about? Well the vibe is relaxed, fashion is left up to your discretion, the food is spectacular (led by Top Chef finalist Sam Talbot), and the staff is even cooler than the super-cool crowd that is hanging out! Sound too good to be true? Well it sounds like an appropriate time to tell you that nightlife is amazing and daytime is left for relaxation, water sports, and biking into town. The town itself is not stuffy and neither is the hotel; everything about The Surf Lodge is laid back. Don't believe me? Open up the sliding door to your balcony in any of the 32 rooms at the hotel and kick it on the hammock that is overlooking the lake.

Wait, so its laid back but it's a hotspot? What should I wear? "Do you want a locals perspective? You just wear what's not dirty!" said Rick Solano jokingly, who was hanging out at the bar. Want some cool advice? Well go no further than the front desk when you meet the adorable fashionista, Nil Erbil, who advises guests "Just remember to pack your personality." How awesome!

To learn more, Grungy Gentleman sits down with Surf Lodge Owner Robert McKinley...

Grungy Gentleman: How did The Surf Lodge concept come about and how did it evolve?

Robert McKinley: I always thought it would be fun to create a clubhouse for friends to meet and shoot the breeze. The spirit of The Surf Lodge is fun and never meant to be too serious. We want our guests to feel the "aloha" spirit throughout the property, they should be able to kick back and relax on the hammock in their room or come to the den in the lobby and listen to us talk about the beach, tell jokes, and watch surf movies. The food concept is local coastal fare that has hints of flavor and spice from all types of places that you would generally find surf. Then late night we all like to let off steam and play some music and dance.

Many surfers are nomads and like to travel to find a new and interesting place to surf and "The Lodge" is a clubhouse for those people.

GG: What should everybody know about The Surf Lodge?

RM: Its fun and the food is great.

GG: How does the “relaxed and free” vibe that is so evident in Montauk tie into fashion at the hotel?

RM: You kind of just said it... From your bathing suit you were in all day or
the great new shirt you picked up at our shop...all is welcome!

GG: What are 3 pieces that all guys should pack when they stay at your hotel?

RM: Trunks, jeans, and a great t-shirt.

GG: The staff at the hotel is extremely fashionable. How does their appearance fit the mold of The Surf Lodge?

RM: I think individual fashion and peoples own personal style encourage a
creative attitude.

GG: Describe the uniform for The Surf Lodge Restaurant waiters. Where did the inspiration for their attire come from?

RM: The waiters are wearing mango colored Loomstate for The Surf Lodge board shorts and a Loomstate blue oxford shirt and navy blue Vans. The Bartenders are wearing our Loomstate for The Surf Lodge "Hang 10" t-shirt and Loomstate recycled military pants.

GG: Are there any recent ventures/collaborations at the hotel that you are excited about?

RM: We have collaborated with Loomstate to create a bunch of fun clothes that are being sold at Bloomingdales and our store at The Surf Lodge.

GG: What can we expect next from The Surf Lodge?
RM: Hmmm.... lots more fun!
